The Difference between Starter And Generator

Starters and generators play different roles in cars, and their main differences lie in their energy source, structure and working principle.


1. Different energy sources: The starter mainly requires a momentary current to start the engine, and the output voltage of the generator will increase as the engine speed increases, so the voltage needs to be adjusted to adapt to different working conditions.


2. Different structures: The starter usually consists of an electric motor, a driving mechanism and a control mechanism, and is specially used to start the engine. The generator includes the rotor, stator, end cover, bearings and windings. It is divided into two parts: the stator winding and the rotor winding. The rotor winding is composed of two pole claws.


3. Different working principles: The working principle of the starter is based on the electromagnet principle, which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and drives the gear to rotate through the electric motor to start the engine. The working principle of a generator is based on the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction, whereby the mechanical energy of the rotation of the rotor is converted into electrical energy on the stator.


4. Maintenance and fault identification: Damage to the starter may be caused by too long starting time or frequent starting. The limit time of continuous operation needs to be controlled within 10 seconds. Generator failures may include rotor imbalance, bearing wear, winding open or short circuits, etc., requiring regular inspection and maintenance.


To sum up, although starters and generators are both important components in automobiles, they have significant differences in energy sources, structures, working principles, maintenance and fault identification.
